  The brilliant Yoshida Brothers have astounded Japan and the world with their nimble-fingered performances on the banjo-like 3-stringed shamisen.  Trained in the passionate traditional Tsugaru folk music of northern Japan, they have brought Tsugaru into the 21st century with their powerful jazz and folk-rock adaptations.
  
  Born in Noboribetsu on Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido, the two Yoshida brothers (Ryoichiro b. 1977, and Kenichi b. 1979), first took up the shamisen at five, and began studying the traditional Tsugaru-shamisen repertory.  They soon were sweeping top prizes at local and national Tsugaru music competitions.  They made their major Japanese debut in 1999, and their first album won the “Traditional Music Album of the Year” award and instantly sold more than 100,000 copies.  In 2003, they made their first American tour and then went on to continuing acclaim in Europe and Korea, numerous TV appearances, and more than 12 prizewinning albums.
